Tonight, me and wife watched the new film Alice, and I’m glad that we did. Why? Because unlike most films about our oppression or history as slaves, this is one where we actually come out on top.
Alice is about a slave played by the beautiful and talented Keke Palmar, who gets tired of being abused and mistreated by her master and develops a plan to escape. But when she does, she discovers that it’s the year 1973 and that black people have been free from slavery for decades. She is shellshocked by the new world she finds herself in and hurt that she’s been lied to her entire life. After coming to grips with her freedom, she concludes that it’s not worth having unless the rest of her people are free also. So, she decides to risk her life to go back and rescue her family from the plantation.
This was unique film that I haven’t seen before in this genre and the ending made me proud. I salute the writer and director Krystin Ver Linden for making this movie. I’m not sure if she’s black or not, but I appreciate her desire and courage to tell this story. It’s one that ALL black people should see!
So, check it out when you get a chance. It’s worth every penny.
